Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park
As you start the 9 Days Rwanda Primates and Wildlife Safari, you will wake up early, enjoy your breakfast and depart Kigali for Akagera National Park, a drive lasting two to three hours. The journey is mainly on tarmacked good quality roads until the final section. Akagera National Park is a home to The Big 5 (Lions, Elephants, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhinoceros). In addition to the Big 5, the park hosts zebras, waterbucks, roan antelope and eland. Arriving in the park, you will first check in the hotel of your choice and have lunch. Later in the afternoon you will drive for a short game drive.
Head back to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Akagera National Park
Wake up early for early breakfast before proceeding with your full day safari game drive accompanied by our professional tour guides, driving through the incredible landscape of Akagera National Park. The varied landscape is shown through the different species spotted here. Visitors to the park will be able to view a range of wildlife on expertly-guided game drives, walks and boating trips, including buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, spotted hyena, zebra and more. The Park also boasts almost 500 species of birds including the spectacular shoebill with its implausibly massive bill and the near-endemic red-faced barbet. The game drive takes around five hours. Lunch will be served picnic lunch style. In the afternoon, head to Lake Ihema for boat cruise. Enjoy an evening boat road across Lake Ihema spotting hippos and many different species of birds.
Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight sleep.
Day 3: Akagera National Park to Nyungwe National Park
Wake up at sunrise; enjoy your breakfast at the hotel, check out the hotel room and be ready for your transfer to Nyungwe National Park home to 75 different species of mammal. Along the way to Nyungwe Forest stop off in the Cultural Heritage Corridor of Rwanda and visit the King’s Palace and the Ethnographic Museum in Huye, former Butare.
Home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates’ species (including a 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus),Nyungwe National Park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 300 species, including 16 endemics.
You will reach there in the evening, check in the hotel, enjoy hotel offerings, and test some local foods and drinks and rest for the next mornings’ full day adventure.
Day 4: Nyungwe National Park
No time to waste! Wake up early; enjoy your breakfast at your hotel & to go chimpanzee tracking in the Nyungwe Forest. After a short briefing by our professional guide, walk through stunning tea plantations before entering the thick luscious forest. There are over 13 species of monkey found in the forest and excellent birding opportunities with over 100 species of butterflies and the occasional chameleon.
One of the oldest rainforests in Africa, Nyungwe is rich in biodiversity and spectacularly beautiful. With us, the excursion will last from one to four hours but you will definitely hear the chimpanzees from the moment you enter the forest. Once found you will stay for an hour with the chimpanzees, watching them play, fight and eat in the atmospheric forest.
In the afternoon at 3PM, experience the only canopy walk in East Africa after lunch. Getting to the canopy is about 2 hours from the starting point at Uwinka visitor Centre. This bridge adjourned between the huge trees one on the feel of the fresh air, 60m above the forest floor. Apart from the freshness in the air and the wonderful aerial view of the trees, you will also enjoy the sights of blue monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, black and white colobus, the red tailed monkeys and the fantastic birds that fly across as you enjoy the walk.

Day 5: Nyungwe National Park to Lake Kivu
Wake up, enjoy your breakfast, check out the hotel room and depart Nyungwe National Park for Lake Kivu. For adventurous travellers, an exciting way to explore Rwanda is a kayaking tour on Lake Kivu. From Nyungwe National Park, we transfer you to Lake Kivu along the beautiful coastal road. The drive lasts around three hours and offers some of Rwanda’s most beautiful scenery. Part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Lake Kivu in the west of Rwanda is surrounded by magnificent mountains and has deep emerald green waters covering a surface area of 2,700 km2. It is Rwanda’s largest lake and the sixth largest in Africa.

Day 6: Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park
Enjoy the breakfast at your hotel & head to the lake to relax. You can even do some Rubavu city tour before we transfer you to Volcanoes National Park in the afternoon.

Day 7: Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Trekking & Cultural Tours
Unrivaled Gorilla trekking! Wake up, breakfast and drive the short journey to the park headquarters before 7:30AM where briefing, porters and tea and coffee will be given before starting the adventure into the forest. Local porters can be arranged and help with the guide to complete the gorilla tracking experience.
Tracking can be between 90 minutes and the whole morning depending on what family group is assigned. You will spend one hour with the gorillas – sometimes moving around to stay with the gorillas or following them. The guide will ensure you are in the best spots to take the most beautiful pictures and experience the breathtaking experience properly. After lunch at your hotel, in the afternoon and set off for Iby’Iwachu Cultural Village, get an insight into the authentic Rwandan cultural practices.
Return to the hotel to freshen up & relax.
Day 8: Golden Monkey Trekking to Kigali
Dream Golden monkey tracking is your last activity within Volcanoes National Park before heading back to Kigali city. Hikes to see the smaller and nimbler monkeys are a fun and adventurous way to explore the forest. Named because of their bright orange bodies, they are indigenous to the region and more elusive than the gorillas and these fast-moving monkeys will certainly keep you on your toes.
Lunch will be served in Musanze city. Enjoy your local light meal before returning to Kigali in the afternoon. Spend the night at a hotel in Kigali and enjoy the hotel’s delicious food and offerings while exploring Kigali nightlife.
Day 9: Richard Kandt House Museum
Enjoy your deep sleep and get up around 9:00 for your breakfast. Check out the hotel room around 10:00 and proceed with the visit to Kandt House Museum. Richard Kandt was the first colonial governor of Rwanda, on behalf of Germany, until the early 1900s. At present, the Kandt House Museum in Kigali comprises three main parts. The first part presents Rwandan life in all its aspects; social, economic, and political before the colonial period. The second part traces the experience of the Rwandan people during the colonial period. The third part covers the history of Kigali, before, during and after the colonial era.
