Here is how to get to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The park is very easy to find as it has unlimited tourist attractions. Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range – home of the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath. How to get to Volcanoes National ParkThe park covers the Districts of Musanze, Rubavu, Nyabihu and Burera. Departing Kigali for Volcanoes National Park will take you two hours; driving. The Park is about 105 kilometers (65 miles) away from the Country’s city and Airport (Kigali). By air you can land in Kigali International Airport after which you will be driven for 2 hours to reach the Park. When planning to participate in the remarkable gorilla trekking, you can choose the cozy accommodation facilities around the Park or in Kigali town because regardless of your choice you will leave totally satisfied, and you will not take long to reach the Park for your adventurous activity. However, wherever you choose to spend your night ahead of the adventure, you will be required to arrive at the Kinigi Park Headquarters by 7:00am for your pre-tracking briefing.

This park is in a region of mostly dormant, heavily vegetated volcanoes and includes Rwanda’s highest point, Mount Karisimbi. The park is famous for Mountain Gorillas, but also offers good birding potential and 200 bird species are known from this area, among these are 17 Albertine Rift Endemics. The species here are similar to Nyungwe, however, Scarlet-Tufted Sunbird is only found here in Rwanda and a trek to the summit of Mt Bisoke is your best bet for this bird. There are also a series of lakes surrounding Volcanoes National Park that can be worth a quick detour. Buhanga Eco-Park is also nearby and there have been sightings of African Pitta here during its migration.

Any of the tourist activities you may choose between tracking endangered mountain gorillas, birding, chattering of the rare golden monkey, Musanze caves, mountain biking, hiking and climbing and cultural tours amongst others can be performed on the same day for people with limited time as the distance from Kigali city and Volcanoes National Park is short.
